9月11日 31Last Thursday I turned 31, many would think this is a pretty much belated blog entry indeed but what to say? I can give my own self some allowance from time to time...
I had a very special birth-weekend indeed, for the first time I got to celebrate my birthday over three memorable special days. I got happy wishes from friends and loved ones, all those wonderful people that have shaped my life and showered me with care and love, I got to wish mom a happy birthday too (we have the same birthday) which is always very special to us.
On Thursday I was invited to an exquisite dinner, spoilt to the utmost with fancy food and live music performance then I retired to a more quiet place where I was able to have desserts and tea while listening to the tunes of Om Kalthoum while the 1940's decor made me feel quite at home really.
On the following day I woke up early to go and have a long relaxing day in the sun, the last weekend before Ramadan it was and we did make good use of it indeed, I hade dinner afterwards at Papa Johnes, I still insist they have the best Pizza in town (Thomas' is something else of course!!)
Saturday I had surgery in the morning then I went out with my dear friends to Cortigiano's (a very old times favourite, but they changed unfortunately) Ahmed abdelKawi, Ahmed Margoushi, Dalia, Sylvia, Shereen Abunga and Magda; thank you guys for the wonderful day, thanks for the delicious cake and above all thanks for being there.
Now I blog from elGouna where I am preparing myself for the holy month of Ramadan, work is more or less average, the weather is perfect, most of my fellow doctors are going away for the start of Ramadan so am looking at a very lonely ten days here it seems.
Cheers 9月6日 Ciao Luciano..."Every day I remind myself of all that I have been given. ... With singing, you never know when you are going to lose the voice, and that makes you appreciate the time that you have when you are still singing well. I am always thanking God for another season, another month, another performance."
~ Luciano Pavarotti, 1935 - 2007
Good bye dear friend,
Good bye with more than heart ache
you will always be beautiful
you will always be great
you will always be Pavarotti
you can never be replaced in our hearts
and we thank God for blessing us with you all these years
Ciao my dear Luciano. 9月5日 HM Queen Farida's Birthday, 86Today, September 5th marks the 86th birthday of the late Queen Farida of Egypt and Sudan, remembering this fine woman in a few lines is not easy, what I can say is that she was a beauty that sailed from once upon a time to become a Aueen of people's hearts, Egyptians have loved her far more than any other Queen or First Lady in their history, many of them still remember her charm and kindness till this very day. I quote a briefing about her from the Mehmet Ali Website created by Mr. Hazem Saker:
The 17-year-old bride was stunningly beautiful, with a shy charm. Her dashing groom, only 18, was head of one of world's mightiest kingdoms at the time. The glamorous couple delighted a nation. She had the kind of breeding that takes generations to achieve—politeness, friendliness and confidence. She also benefitted from a good education at Alexandria's Notre Dame de Sion; with emphasis on manners and fluency in languages.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() She was Safinaz Hanim Zulfikar and he was HM King Faruk, Head of the Mehmet Ali dynasty. Their glittering wedding, was on 20 January 1938 at the Kubbe sarayi in Cairo.
Eleven years later, and after the birth of her third daughter, sorrow abounded. When it became apparent that HM the King was unable to return the affections of the lonely Farida, she delicately encouraged their divorce which took place on 19 November 1948. From her private Pyramids Villa, her favorite refuge, which later on she could not recapture from its agressors, to Lebanon, Paris and Switzerland, a collection of her paintings and letters revealed her misery. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Children ![]() ![]() 9月2日 elGouna-Cairo-Alamein-Cairo-elGouna-Cairo-Cairo-CairooooDear Diary,
Well, dry ink syndrome as my friend Tweety calls it or just plain being busy, I haven't written anything here in quite some time, and what's more disturbing is that I keep writing about my life and don't have time to publish any useful stuff any more. But putting up woth me isn't that bad after all? I can be amusing sometimes too :) Any way the elGouna shuttle trips but these days I fly there alot and don't use the bus much, it is a mix of the fact that I am getting older and less patient and that I have been told to fly more cos it is safer!!! Any way I came back from elGouna only to drive to Alamein where I was stationed at the Alamein Hsopital for one week as a part of an official dispatch from Cairo University to the Ministry of health to cover remote areas with emergency specialities during the high season of the summer. I was one hectic experience but at least I got to visit my friends in Marina and to swim a couple of times, I also got to see my aunts and cousins so it was more than rewarding for me. I have spent such a nice time with my friends and have gotten closer to them by sharing this travelling experience, something I constantly miss at elGouna and throughout my work crazed life style!! Any way I had some good time there where I and my dear friend Amr elSamman arranged the first neurosurgical set of instruments in the Alamein Hospital, and I operated on the first neuro surgical case there (Extradural Haematoma), the only bad thing is that I had an accident on the day I was leaving but Thanks God, I'm fine and the damages to the car are repairable. I went back to Cairo only to fly to elGouna a day after, three days to go and the back again to cairo!! I took five 24 hour shifts at the Manial Specialized University Hospital in one week, it is just like me to cram them together to save the hassle of coming and going, I also have been going out to many places and can give excellent restaurant reviews about the north coast and Cairo too but I've put on so much weight as a side effect which is making me so annoyed, as a matter of fact I even decided to work out for the first time in history!!
Any way dear diary, I leave you with two "Historical" videos that play the two old national anthems of Egypt, the Royal and the Republican anthems, I am pretty partial to all of them really including the current beautiful anthem, this music was composed for the love of Egypt and this alone means alot to me.
